CARL CORLEY (This column is a service of the Mental Health Association in Louisiana and its chapters.) 1 11" I 239 I heard recently about sheltered workshops which are being operated for retarded and mentally ill persons who cannot work at regular jobs. Can you tell me more about sheltered workshops and how I might be able to enroll in one for the mentally disabled? 9pattiBlf Dominion "THE SPANISH PEOPLE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN WONDERFUL SAILORS AND EXPLORERS. OF PEASANT ANCESTRY WERE EAGER Sheltered workshops are employment programs for the emotionally ill, physically handicapped, and retarded citizens who cannot work in competitive job settings. The employment workshops are structured so that participants will produce as much as they are physically or mentally capable of. Although the workshop participant is paid below minimum wage, there is no pressure for him to produce a required amount. He is paid according to what he produces. While sheltered workshops are becoming more numerous around the nation, Louisiana does not yet have workshops specifically for the emotionally ill.

Many states do offer these services for the emotionally ill, but in Louisiana they are primarily for retarded citizens. To find out more about sheltered workshops in existence in Louisiana, contact the Division of Vocational Rehabiliation, the National Association for Retarded Citizens, or Goodwill Industries. Of course, an alternative for those who are interested and can afford to do so is to do volunteer work. There are many community organizations that need volunteers. Volunteer activity permits one to develop job skills without normal job pressures.

It serves as a motivating force to help one reenter the competitive job market. Volunteer work, therefore, is not only a means of contributing to society, but also a means of contributing to yourself. Zercngue seeks re-election Announcement of his candidacy for re-election as chief of police for the City of Opelousas was made this week by Howard Zerangue, as an independent candidate. In making his announcement, Chief Zerangue reviewed his record of the past four years as compared to the pledges he made in his campaign for the office.

He stressed his own personal involvement in law enforcement in the city, as well as in the many "extracurricular" activities in which the city police can serve the people. Chief Zerangue maintains he has kept his promise to be always on call in any crisis, putting in an average of 70 hours a week on duty. He has divided the city into four districts for purposes of patrol, with members of the force seeking to spot trouble spots before problems develop. His program for dealing with juveniles seeks to develop better rehabilitation for delinquents, and to direct their interests into constructive lines. He cites his department's attention toward narcotic control in cooperation with state police, and keeps the public informed as to police activities through regular reports in the press.

"BUBBA" HENRY Vr Extension study offered by USL Opelousas 1 Any certified teacher in an approved public or non-public school is eligible to participate. A full-time teacher on approved leave is also eligible. in order to best meet the preferences of teachers, Kennison said. He explained that this service is prompted by Act 20, which provides for tuition-free college courses for teachers. Principals throughout the parish have received tuition-free application forms for teachers interested in enrolling in the classes.

Persons, other than current teachers, who are eligible may obtain the tuition-free application form from Mrs. Dot Anderson at the school board office on Creswell Lane in By PAT CROSBY Registration for the extension courses to be offered in Opelousas through the University of Southwestern Louisiana will be conducted sometime between January 16 and 30, according to Dr. James Kennison, director of research, development, and evaluation for the St. Landry Parish School Board. The location and specific date of registration will be announced in the near future.

Parish teachers are currently being surveyed to determine which courses USL should offer Kennison explained that a teacher planning to take a course on a college campus should submit his or her tuition-free application form to the State Department of Education in Baton Rouge. However, those teachers who want to enroll in the extension courses should keep their forms until they report for registration for the courses. Mike Aucoin and Rob Duplechin are having an introductory sale on these fine grandfather clocks, this week only. SEVERAL PEOPLE IN EUNICE trap during the winter, and "Soul" Andrus, above, is one of the most experienced. He dropped by the office to show us an oddity that occurred last week while he was running his traps.

He found a trap that caught two young nutria at the same time. Andrus explains that this happens occasionally, biit is unusual because the nutria have to hit the trap at the exact same time in order for this to happen. Andrus was discussing the event with Coleman "Red" Fontenot of Wildlife and and Fontenot suggested that the Incident was unusual enough to deserve recording. While Andrus was visiting he said that Nutria are not too plentiful in this area anymore due to the Inclination locally to eliminate open ditches in favor of underground irrigation systems. He added that once a waterway is dredged out, the nutria will seldom return because they like to live under roots of trees in old banks, and the clean lines left along the waterway by the dredging crew eliminates the nesting places.

He also said that nutria move in roving bands staying a while at one spot and then moving on to another, Farmers have long been upset with muskrat for cutting levees, but Andrus says nutria will go over a levee instead of cutting it. The nutria' damages however, by cutting it down in order to make a large stack bit which to sleep. He says they can do as much damage as a cow In a field in a hurry. He added that nutria bear young all year long.
